Flowers for front of my home ( East side )

I have a concrete planter about 6 feet long below a similar sized picture window, and would like to establish some type of perennial flowers in it. I'm thinking perhaps MUMS ? The planter is on the East side, so it gets quite a bit of sunlight, up until mid-afternoon. It is my understanding that mums have to be planted in time for them to " winter-over " for them to return again the next year..correct ? All suggestions are greatly appreciated. Larry

My favorite has been spirea with purple/magenta color flowers that attract butterflies. It's a perennial flowering bush that is on the small size but is hardy in winter. I might plant 2 or 3 equally spaced then while young, intersperse some annuals. As they age and fill in, just let them be with no annuals needed.
Mums are Autumn flowers. I have the same situation, I have planted Astilbe that does very well and it comes in pink, white and red. Works great.
I will have to check on the height of Astilbe when grown, because I am hoping for something around 12" to 18" tall at maturity. The colors sound nice.............Thanks, Joan.
