We have two daughters graduating from college on the same day, and we are having a family celebration at the house. I had this idea a while back but in true procrastinator fashion, I waited until the week before to get this done. Given more time I would do things a little differently, to make them look neater, but considering the time constraints I think they came out really great! Thanks to my employer who doesn't know they covered the cost of all the color photocopies. Sssh! Don't tell them!
First, I dug through the mess that we call our "Cloffice" (a room that serves as both closet and office, still not fully unpacked and a complete mess) for any school/camp/sports photos I could dig up. Ideally, of course, a more organized person would have every year's school photos filed away and be able to attach and display these in order, all the same size. Well, I'm not that organized. I found what I could find, brought them to work, scanned them, plopped them into a Word file, cropped, sized by eye, duplicated them as fast as I could so I'd have multiples on a sheet, and printed several sheets of each. That took me only a half hour! Speedy. Then I brought them home and we had a cutting session while watching a movie.
Lucky for me I had some twine and a stapler on hand. I was literally making this up as I went.
I made it two-sided, because I wasn't yet sure where or how I'd hang them. Again, ideally, using uniform sizes and glue would make this neater. But ultimately, nobody will really notice the staples or any crookedness, and the staples actually made them adjustable.
In the end I hung them flat against the wall rather than from the ceiling so people could see the photos, so perhaps they didn't have to be double sided, but it lends strength and coverage in case any flip over.
I made four garlands total. The two hung on this wall have eight photos of each daughter on each strand, in random order for speed.
The two I hung over the fireplace alternate between two pics of each daughter, the oldest and newest ones I had.
I didn't make the grad cap/star garland, by the way. Got that from Amazon for $10, my only expense.
The finished look over the fireplace! Came out great! Will probably adjust how they're hung; one side is higher than the other!
And this finished wall is the first thing people will see when they enter the house. My mother drew the artwork of my girls and me using pastels, from a photo of when I brought the second daughter home from the Birthing Center.
