Remodeling a fireplace

by Barbara Bell
we are redoing a fireplace in a lake house. This used to have a big cabinet on top of it that held a small tv. Because of the design, it would only hold a small tv that couldn’t be tilted. We decided to remove the to cabine, and now are trying to figure out how to mount a bigger tv above it and how to fill that space. Also, we are planning to do something with the wood trim to make it more rustic, so we are looking for input on that as well. We just want a more casual look here at the lake. Thanks!

It looks like a corner fireplace. Do you really want to mount a TV at a slant? You would probably have to put some kind of wall up in the corner to mount the tv or use some kind of braces. Try this website https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/how-to-wall-mount-a-tv/

Some people keep the fireplace and use it for burning candles or incense. Personally I think the wood trim looks good with the stone (rustic).

You could always just paint the wood trim to match the wall color. That way it would sort of blend in with the walls.

That’s an idea I hadn’t thought of, thanks! I’ll have to explore that option.

You could see if there is a mount that would have enough tilt to bring it out flat, otherwise, you may have to build a stout brace across the corner to put a mount on so that it will handle the weight of both the mount and the TV hanging off of it.

I like the idea of building something across that corner to hold the mount for the tv. Maybe I could build shelves to hide that part, and have the tv in front of the shelves. It had a big cabinet Up there and looked so heavy for the room. Shelves Would be lighter and more interesting. Thanks, I think I may have a direction to go on this now!

I would gray/age the wood to make it more rustic with steelwool and vinegar or use driftwood. You could put a natural/live edge piece of wood over the mantel. See last video for aging.

We have a cabin, which had a corner shelf for a small TV. My husband added another shelf over the existing one, which comes out over the other one. He added a facing to the new one, which hid the old smaller shelf. I holds a much larger TV. Also, It would look like a mantle that usually protrudes out over a fireplace, if you did that.
