Somewhere in my past someone told me that to make your home look bigger one needs to keep the paint in all of the rooms white. Is that correct?

    Not white, but light.

Lots of ”small house” ideas on house.com and architectural digest.com.

It’s your house. Have fun with it. And please don’t limit yourself to tiny furniture either. Bigger functional pieces work, just fewer. Don’t waste space with armchairs or sofas with giant arms though.

I agree with Deborah. The reason white was suggested was to make the rooms brighter and appear larger, this can be accomplished by using the lighter shades of the colour chip. Go colour and have fun.

lighter colors will brighten a space and potentially make it look bigger, but there are no rules. You paint those walls however you want, they are your walls! If you want to stick with the lighter walls, just find brighter shades in colors you like.
