How do I get rid of roots from a tree that was cut down?

We cut down a Braford pear tree and had the stump grind but some of the roots remain and are sprouting leaves. We want to sod over the area where the roots are. Advice would be appreciate.

I second Rachels advice. Treating with herbicides or salt will make it way more difficult for sod - that stuffs going to be in the ground for quite some time.
You might get a Dragon Stick. It’s for safely burning weeds. Scrape (including bark) away to expose roots and burn as much as possible. My husband loves his.
we drilled holes in our stump, and we put in ice cream salt and it will help the rotting of the stump faster - you just add the salt whenever it is needed. I have heard that buttermilk will do the same thing
