Looking to create some visual interest and add character to that deck? It's not hard to create a beautiful and simple deck pergola! You can add lights, plants, etc and make a space that wows!
Here is our video tutorial of this project! Make sure to watch for tips and helpful ideas in creating your pergola. Head over to the blog for the free plans. You can also get the parts and materials list at Remodelaholic.com.
To begin, we cleaned off the deck (yeah, it needs attention) and attached 2 of the 4 support brackets with hex bolts in the locations where the uprights would go. We spray painted our brackets to closely match the stain we used.
According to the cut list, cut the three parts of each post to length. Notch out the front two posts. Stain the faces and edges of the post boards, then attach them together with deck screws.
Now that your posts are assembled and stained, install upright and use a temporary brace to hold until you attach the top beams. Cut and stain top beams, then attach with 4 screws in each corner.
With the side beams and posts in place, attach the beam across the front. We're in the home stretch!
Finish installing the support brackets. We stained our pergola one more time to achieve a darker color. You could also use poly to help weather proof your pergola.
Sit back and enjoy your hard work or get to styling! We hope you love your pergola for years to come!

Is this frame attached to the house? If not, it looks shaky to me. An eight foot post becomes a giant lever that can easily pull out a lag bolt. Be very careful about how much pressure you put on the posts. For instance, a ladder leaning against the post might be enough pressure to pull it over.

Do you have plans for a deck that is not attached to a house. I want to build a deck but not attach it to the house. ANY help would be appreciated.

How would you attach the poles to cement?
