Love the idea of the flagstone or cobblestone sitting area.. maybe add an outside fire pit and a few potted shade plants ..
You could add pea gravel and large stones and make a rock garden.
Make a sitting area, you'll be cool, and the stone might not be a good choice. You can't put a chair or table on it.
There are perennial shade-loving plants that thrive on neglect ( my favorite type) such as ferns, hosta, lily of the valley. Any nursery can guide you. Mosses are another ootion...you never need to mow and they stay green yr-round.
plant hostas or shade loving plants I have the same problem and we also put in mondo grass and it works well
