Best place to plant lavender

I'm not sure if it is the best way, but I have lavender in the ground in my backyard and it has been flourishing for the last 5 years.
I think the ground is better because it will want to spread and come back each year. In a pot, you will have to make sure you add nutrients. Of course, if you want it contained, a planter box that allows from some spread would work.
