Dfmon May 17, 2018I’m partial to the heirloom variety’s . They taste better. The commercialy packaged by big seed companies are usually bred for uniformity of fruits. Flavor not so much. The heirloom ones you can save the seeds and plant them the next growing season. There is an out fit close to decorah iowa called seed savers exchange. They do have an on line catalog.HelpfulReply

Nancy Turneron May 17, 2018There is no best way to grow tomatoes. Make sure you use well amended soil, give it extra calcium, a little acid, they like a little. Use a good tomato or tomato and vegetable fertilizer. Make sure it gets plenty of sunlight and water when it needs it, don't let it get real dry between waterings, it likes consistent moisture to prevent splitting. Trial and error is how I learned about tomatoes, what they liked and what they didn't like. A lot depends on where you are, what kind of climate your area has.HelpfulReply

Cindyon May 17, 2018I use a deep root watering method in my garden. I use a soaker hose and wind it around all the plants that I grow. So I water the soil and not the plant. Makes a real difference. Also, pollination is important and since we are loosing bee populations, you should consider pollinating the plants yourself. It's easy to do. When you see blossoms on your tomato plants, go out every few days and gently jiggle each stalk. I read that unpollinated plants will yield 15% - 20% of the plants capacity while a pollinated plant will yield 90% - 95% of its potential. That's a huge difference. And, last but not least, soil mix is important. I use one-third soil, one-third manure, and one-third sand. The sand is important for water retention. After all that water and sun.HelpfulReply

Chubby58on May 17, 2018All of the above. I trickle water into the little moat I make around each tomato plant. I also pull the suckers off every week. That is the little shoot that comes out in the V of the main stems.HelpfulReply
