smother the grass out with newspaper and cardbaord,lay heavy landscape fabric (not netting),top with mulch
First pull up all of the weeds around your hosta then layer newspaper thick around them, Wet the newspaper well then cover with mulch.. This should take care of any weeds that come up. I did this to my front flower bed last year and only a few little weeds managed to sneak through. It worked a lot better than the landscaping fabric.
