Replacing counter tops with Laminate

I need to replace my current counter tops but can't afford granite. There are some laminate options that look pretty good but I wasn't sure if I should go with the laminate sheet over my current counter top or remove the current counter top and replace with the granite looking laminate counter top. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Nicole if it were me I would first base the decision on how good a shape your current counter tops are in. If you can get just as good an end product as you would totally replacing it then I would go with the first option IF it was a significant price difference.

Installing a new layer of laminate is as much work as installing new countertops. Also my concern would be that the particle board base may have damage that you cant see especially the near sink. You can also consider wood instead. If this is a diy project, wood ( 2x lumber) or butcher block may be within your budget. Both require about the same skill level and tools. Wood can be finished many colors and made water resistant. Check youtube for videos on how to install each type of countertop and compare material costs then decide. Photo examples attached. Hope this helps
