Hi Ruth, there are actually native "weeds" that are really tough "invasive" pretty and take over great in places like that. One that comes to mind in my area is a native called creeping charlie (also known as ground ivy) its been taking over my dog kennel for years and I just love it! It blooms really pretty little flowers and stays low enough that it never needs to be mowed AND it took over so very little else grows around it. I'm wondering if there might be something like that in your area that might work for you?

honestly there are many fixes, however the weed situation must be taken care of.planting creeping jenny in weeds makes no sense.the weeds will just take that over.xeroscaping means starting over.The only other option is smothering out what you do not want in thereabout was stated you get do it.

I think you're asking this at a great time. If you cover the area with clear plastic it will "burn" everything out, roots, seeds, etc. Of course, the more you pull out and the more sun it gets, the better. It'll take a few weeks, depending on the sun. Then you can cover the area with a block,such as newspaper (4 or 5 sheets), cardboard, landscape fabric. Plant what you will, then mulch 3-4 inches. This should block MOST of the weeds. The paper & cardboard will need to be replaced every 1-2 yrs., but for most of the time you should be relatively weed free, care free. The soil will stay moist longer (less watering),
