This answer might be influenced by your location and planting zone.

My favorites in zone 7 are coreopsis, lilac, coneflowers, lilly of the valley, peonies, hydrangeas, clematis and knock out roses.

Some have a short per bloom time, some bloom throughout the summer.

Most roses do well if they have mulch in dry climates and LOTS of daily sunshine. The miniature ones especially do well, maybe azaleas in your area? maybe lilacs? those are common but so beautiful and lilacs smell so great too.

No doubt your County Extension Service or local Masters Gardeners programs will have great advice. Look them up on the web, specifying your county and state. Free educated advice. Most state universities also have Extension programs.

What you want is a perennial vs. an annual. Then what once are best in your area I would check either a local nursery or google "best perennials for zone ?"

I had perennials planted in a huge half wine barrel and they froze over the winter and rotted after the planters thawed. These were hostas, which come back every year in the ground. If it gets really cold where your live, it is questionable if they will freeze in the pots even though they don't freeze when they are planted in the ground.
