  • Anything can be done. Do you have a photo? Might be easier to suggest what might work. How far or how long does the path or walkway need to be? Do you have a budget to be mindful of? Any materials off limits?

The best walkway for a wheelchair is continuous concrete or decking. The walkway must be 36" wide and 48" is better for turning around. Railing is recommended on raised decking of any height. The ADA recommended slope is 1 inch in 12 inches of run. So, a 10 foot ramp would be 10 inches higher on the top end. On slopes steeper than 4.8º switchbacks are necessary. Switchbacks are still a good idea for providing a place to rest and to control speed of descent. Incorporating overlooks at switchbacks makes each one a destination as well.

The maximum residential slope WITH assistance is 2 inches for every 12 inches of run. Motorized chairs can handle slopes of 1.5 inches in 12 inches of run.
