Kathy, what kind of "dirty" is the tub? Is it stained, built up soap scum, etc.? What is the tub made of? Can you just take a shower instead?

if it's porcelain, the surface has probably been eroded thru the years of abrasive cleaners; Rustoleum makes a GREAT Tub-Tile paint to 'refinish' pieces like this.
Add 1/2 gallon of bleach and laumdry detergent to tub filled witj hot water allow soak for at least 4 hours. CLR is for lime ..stains from minerals
