I live in an 80 year old mission style stone home, uhh hmmm… money pit lol 😆, I NEED a kitchen redo? Any suggestions on where to start? It's an abnormally big kitchen but funds are almost pathetic. I'd like an island or some center piece and I'm a def diy 'r thanks to hometalk but this kitchen has my head everywhere.
Any suggestion welcomed!

Everything looks in good solid condition so changing color scheme will make a huge difference. An island can be created from used cabinets from a Habitat for humanity Re-store for example. seating can be added with overhang of counter or at bar height or a table height add on. I have seen islands created from all sorts of things like a desk or dresser, you may own something you can use. Check houzz and pinterest for ideas. You can search houzz with specific colors so you get a sense of each color combo. Hope this helps

A good decluttering would be a place to start. If you havent used it in a year and or don’t love it, donate or toss it. This way you will get a better picture of what is needed for your kitchen.

I'm sorry Brenda. I wasn't sure if you had seen my note attached to the pic. Usually there's no clutter. Unfortunately we have endured a 4 day power outage and son off to boot camp. It's usually clutter free lol 😆 The overflow was killing me lol 😆

Our Habitat stores charges outrageous prices for cabinetry. We recently found some for our garage and laundry room at a custom cabinet maker who takes them out the the kitchens he remodels. But first, lets talk "money pit". Unless you have all the other things taken care of in this house don't invest in a complete kitchen remodel. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson the hard way (about to lose $$$ on the sale of a house). New backsplash, counters, and a change of color are safe ways to refurbish until you are ready for a complete redo.

Thank you Barbara! To be honest, we don't have a Habitat store near us. I was thinking of repainting and changing the hardware. The kitchen itself was repainted last year. The floor, well… blue lol 😆 but it is definitely a conversation piece when I have visitors. They love it! I don't. It does fit with the style of the house. I'm in desperate need of an island or something to draw the middle in. I have basically two dining tables. I think, my diy wheel moving, that my good ole pottery barn table may be a start to the island. Right now little leaks sprung through the house due to freak rain on the east coast ugh. I will check the local cabinet builder. I want to paint mine but I do want to add additional. The room needs to be filled

I would love a kitchen like that. Without much thought the first thing that occurs to me is that you need a center of interest in this big room. You have two table setups (it appears) what about a nice generous island and then one table with chairs? The area under the window just needs to be neatened up and to have a seating bench of some kind with storage underneath. The plastic bins should not be part of the decor with so much room. It looks like a nice large sunlit room with a good view, ample cupboard space, don't know what the floor is but it seems in good condition.

      Hello. Emily!

I'm sorry, I shouldve should've pics sans a 4 day power 💪 outage and my son leaving for bootcamp. That clutter is usually not there lol 😆 He amassed so much! Mostly doing load after load of laundry and donating to the salvation army. The outage halted everything ugh!

We had a budget for the kitchen but these little, huge, things popped up and depleted it over a really short period of time. I was thinking of working off the higher table, my super awesome pb high table, to lay groundwork for an island, your suggestions? I have a formal dining riom that we utilize nightly so the other table is a filler. It's a gorgeous kitchen I fell in love with the house because of it and the light. I was thinking of a banquette by the windows against the wall and take the other table and create a kinda family room. The slider goes out to our deck which we live on in the summer and our in ground pool is just steps down from the gate. You may catch a glimpse in the pic. I don't know? It def needs a substantial island and cabinet updating (painting, New hardware, sink, faucets) flooring is in good shape. A change is a wish list but can wait

Choose a paint color you like and paint the walls. Consider redoing your back splash with a pattern you like. If you sew, make some new curtains for your windows. Place or hang a small potted ivy in the window.....could be artificial.

How about removing some of the upper cabinets and using them for an island? Check out this link. http://livewellnetwork.com/Knock-It-Off/episodes/How-to-Make-a-Kitchen-Island-Out-of-Cabinets/9255573 I'm not neat enough to have open shelving in the kitchen but perhaps you are.

You have great space! What I see is the furniture pieces floating. No definition between the two tables. I know most folks like open areas, but a division between the two areas, whether it's a screen, hutch or some type of divider.

Erin, I know how messy grown kids can make a house! I have one who has grown up children herself and she still makes a mess here! Unless the cupboards aren't functional, I think they look quite o.k.. Maybe if the hinges and pulls were not such a different color they all would look contemporary?!? Sometimes we get stymied by things that really aren't a big deal but for some reason we can't see the forest for the trees at least I am that way about a couple of household needed changes. You do have the nucleus for an island from that high table. Maybe if you photograph that from all sides this site could give some help.

It looks to me like you’ve got a fantastic space to work with!

I think you have a color in mind just use a darker shade on the bottom cabinets and lighter on top. As far as an island goes get an old large dresser use it for one side and shelving on the other cover with plywood and tile it till funds change to get a more designer top. Put the island on wheels so you can move it. If you install an island in a permanent position some cities have a code that it has to have wiring. you can beat that with wheels. Anytime you redo kitchens hardware has the most impact. There is faucetsdirect.com and other discount places for hardware. Hope to see finished pictures.

Your cabinet looks in very good shape, so take some acetone and give them a good cleaning to remove all greasy build up. There is no sanding needed. Make sure you use a oil based paint so you can wipe down easily. Remove 2 door at a time and paint or you can remove all doors just make sure to number them so the doors go back on right cabinetry. It only took me 3 quarts.

I will post a before and after of my kitchen redo.

    This is the after.

I would remove the high bar stool chairs and use that table for an island maybe with some new laminate top on it and find some way to put shelves or drawers under it, even if an older piece of furniture, etc. new hardware on kitchen cupboards or paint old ones. You have a lot of knobs, etc

Def cupboards to ceiling with fancy cornices and low chandelier over island get carpenter to shape wood to cover sinks so gives you extra counter space happy labouring
