How to Update a Kids’ Bathroom on a Budget

My daughters share a small upstairs bathroom. I redecorated it about 4 years ago. Now that my girls are teens, the space could use a new look. But, our budget is tight and the bathroom could already use a new toilet. (The current one has low flush strength and clogs frequently.) I could use suggestions on how to add storage space and how to update the vanity and mirror on a budget. (The room has an oak vanity and the counter is often cluttered with products.) I would also love suggestions for a new color scheme - the green walls could use a new coat of paint, too. I am looking forward to your suggestions! Thanks!!

For storage, go to the dollar store and get stacking bins or plastic shoe boxes. Label each bin with a kid's name and let them store their daily toiletries in it. Come morning, she can pull out her bin and have everything handy without keeping it on the counter.

You can check out the oops paint for discounted paint to change the color cheaply. Get some clip on rings and a pretty king sized flat sheet to make a new shower curtain. Change the color of the cabinet with paint or stain. Recycle old t-shirts into a homemade rag rug (pinterest has many examples of this). Hang up some new artwork (dollar store frame, draw paint your own) to change the mood. Replace hand towels to color coordinate with the shower curtain, those can also be purchased at the dollar store.

I would paint the bathroom white (so the girls can accessorize with colourful girlie things!). Painting your current vanity will give an easy, inexpensive makeover. You could frame your existing mirror in stained pine (which is cheap!) for more of a farmhouse look. Then add two or three wide shelves over the toilet for baskets (to hide all the toiletries). A new white shower curtain is also an inexpensive way to freshen up the room. Good luck and have loads of fun along the way! xx

Remove the shelf behind the toilet and use a rack that will hold all of your accessories.

Under cabinet storage - also can use shoe holder that hangs behind the door for storage. You can add a frame to the mirror by measuring the frame - going to your local hardware store so they can cut wood that you purchase there - paint it and apply with velcro if you are not handy. Def needs new paint and remember not to add too many small items. A larger photo is better than a bunch of little ones. I would get a magazine rack to place the tissues and items on the back of the toilet. Shutters would look great on the window. I wish you the best of luck!

I prefer to spend money on really important things like....the toilet.

when money is tight I’ve found going all white saves TONS. White walls, curtains and towels. Then all the clutter doesn’t “look” as cluttered.

i go to Goodwill to find shelving. They always have lots of used shelving.

in addition I find storage bins there for all the girls stuff. I raised two daughters on a tight budget so I truly understand.

    have fun at thrift stores!
