I have to put clothing and household items into storage for an extended period of time. Will plastic totes be enough or do I need to put moth balls or anything else into each tote. TIA!icon

  • Use those space bag things (vacuum out the air) they have them at the dollar store. I stored some kids clothes in them in the garage, years later I pulled them out and they still smelled freshly washed. And they take up a lot less space

For clothing and other soft items (towels, blankets, etc.) I would use the vaccuum bags. They not only keep things airtight, but also take up SO much less space-no need for moth balls! For shoes, you can use the bags, but slip in a piece of cedar to keep them fresh. As for the totes, make sure you get the ones that don’t have openings at the handles and seal tight.

Make sure there is NO liquid in your storage unit. My Granddaughter just opened her climate controlled storage units from a move two years ago and everything was covered in mold. They said it was because the movers had packed something with liquid:(

I took a course once on "saving things" and leaned that moth balls are bad to store things in (so are cedar chests)

my mom always used fabric dryer sheets to keep the bugs out and no moisture got into anything she did this every year and we just used rubber maid totes
