Popcorn ceilings, ugh!

What is a less expensive attractive alternative to these unsightly ceilings? We are not too terribly handy but they look awful even after painting! Help?

You can take a paint or putty scraper and with light pressure scrape the popcorn off. It does get messy so having an empty room make it easier to clean. Then paint over again.

Yow could cover the popcorn ceiling with lightweight sheet rock and paint again OR you can cover the ceiling with bead board?

Some remove the popcorn ceilings others cover them up. If it's been up before 1978 there may be asbestos in it. You can get test kits for it. My crew and I used to wet it down and scrape it off. Then Georgia Pacific came out with 4"x10" 1/4" drywall to cover ceilings. We started using that.

This is what other Hometalkers did.

If you don't want to remove it, cover it like we did with beadboard, but it is a big job and you might have to hire it out.
