Garden/landscaping- best beginners advice?

Hey there, I am totally new to the home gardening thing, I'm trying to find of the best beginners advice on what I need to do to make a cute little garden. So far I have newspapers, border, and potted plants, herbs, veggies.

Congrats on your garden-to-be! I'd make sure you know what time of day the sun is strongest in your garden area and which direction the garden is facing (south, west, etc). Make sure the plants you've chosen are suited for the amount of direct sunlight you have. And most importantly--don't forget to water them! :-)

A repeat, i know.... know your plants and what requirements they need. (light, water, fertilizer, soil, etc).
Start w/ easy plants - annuals... then as you gain confidence, expand! Good Luck!
