Sara, I don’t think red maples are native to Marietta, Ga. I’m from Cartersville, a hair farther north, and pine trees, magnolias, and various kinds of oak are typical. But advances in disease resistance and plant propagation are being made all the time. Go to the best plant nursery and landscaper you can and get advice on the autumn blaze red maple and other trees for a kids’ playground. Best wishes ☺️
Also, maples are slow growers so if planted in playground area now...your children's children can enjoy!
Tree also needs to be durable around kids unless you surround the tree with a fence. They like to tear leaves off, sometimes get a young twig or two and even peel some bark. They're not being mean, they just want treasures or to make something. Whatever you decide to buy, buy the biggest one you can afford from a grower and have it professionally installed. Then on Arbor Day, send away for free trees for some kids to plant elsewhere in the playground.
