what type of door? solid wood, hollow core? metal? you want to take off the excess height evenly by trimming the top and the bottom. that works for hollow core as well. hollow core doors there is a wood internal frame in place. is not very wide that's why split the trim downs evenly. metal door, I'm clueless .. one of the builder trads peeps can answer that one.
