Know your plants first. There are some plants that like fertilizer a lot less and you could hurt them. I have a couple of plants that only get fertilizer once a year. For others that need it more frequently, use a type you can mix in the water. Follow the directions exactly so that you don't burn the roots. Put them on schedules according to their fertilizer needs. There are many different ones out their, even ones you don't have to use but every three to four months ( it is granular) I use Miracle grow in both forms, in water for indoor plants and granular for outdoor plants.
