Almost any material can be used for Roman shades... except very sheer or light weight fabrics... If you really like a lighter weight fabric... line it with a drapery lining (light blocking one for a darker room) Simplicity and McCalls both have patterns for Roman Shades... with full instructions and materials listings... just adjust for window size.... on a really big window.. you might think about making 2 or 3 smaller shades (your first go around) instead of trying to make one huge one.

Good Luck and have fun with it!

you should use a fabric that has some weight to it. And/or line the fabric. This is not as easy a job as making curtains, but it can be done. Watch the video and go to a store that sells these and examine the back of them. You need tape, some kind of "sticks" (posters here have used old venetian blind slats) a board for the top of the window to attach the blind to. The tape has rings in it that allow line to be inserted to raise and lower the shade. As I said this is a job that can be done but needs some DIY skills. Good luck!
