Get a small can of silver rustolium and paint it I did that you can’t tell the diffrence
The drain is an alloy of metals plated with chrome, When the chrome coating flakes or is compromised the metal underneath tends to rust. Some manufacturers make the drains out of plastic plated with chrome. Paint won't hold for long from constant contact with water. Best to replace.
