I used miracle grow to start the plants. I've added egg shells and coffee grounds to it as well and nothing much has happened. Plants start growing and then they die. .they get watered when their dry.

I think Kathy meant Miracle grow. If you have soil other than top soil in your garden, her suggestions are all good. They like a little acid (coffee grounds) and crushed egg shells are for extra calcium they need. Crushed egg shells will take a long time to actually get into the soil, the finer it is the quicker it will get to the roots (powder consistency gets to the roots quickest). Tomato and vegetable fertilizer is the go to fertilizer. Do not foliar feed veggies, it gives you great green plants, but little produce, it needs to go to the roots not leaves. I always dig my holes bigger than what I need and mix my garden soil with potting soil and some peat moss.

It comes in a large square bale, one lasts me two years at least. It is already in good potting soil, but it helps hold water some and helps keep the soil healthy. I have good luck with that. If I run out of potting soil and only have top soil, I use at least half peat moss mixed in with it to keep the heavy top soil loosened up. Peat moss is a naturally occurring thing and is the stuff that if it is in the potting soil, it has a hard time wetting until it soaks up water. Dry it kind of looks like a moss, but it really does help my plants in pots do well.

Have the soil analyzed rather than indiscriminately adding chemicals. Use soil designed for raised beds, NOT soil that you dug up in your yard. Add compost every year. Place your raised bed so it gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water if dry.
