This is the first post in my "Blah to Beautiful Bathroom Makeover Series."  Each post will cover a different phase of the revamp of the guest bathroom in my home.  I've finally gotten sick of it's lack of character! This post covers how I updated the boring builder grade honey oak vanity.

I don't know about you but I am obsessed with black and white bathrooms lately.  (Black and white decor of any kind if I'm being 100% honest!) I. Cannot. Get. Enough! Naturally, this obsession has GOT to enter my home! Cue the makeover music! Being this is the first post in a series make sure you check out my blog, www.daysandawakeup.com for the upcoming posts that lead to the big reveal!

Here is a picture of our bathroom.  BORING, isn't it!? I've allowed it to be this way for years, I'm embarrassed to admit it.  Not anymore! Time to give this bland space some personality!

This bathroom is small, mundane, and hardly used, which is why it's been neglected for so long! First things first, the basic honey oak vanity has got to go...STAT! Considering we will be leaving our lovely home sooner rather than later my husband would prefer I didn't put a bunch of money into expensive renovations (ugh I hate it when he's right!) so I will make due with what we've got...within reason of course!

I did a great deal of research on the "easiest way to paint a bathroom cabinet."  Because, well, I'm lazy!  Scrubbing, sanding, washing, priming, sanding, then FINALLY painting seems just a little too overwhelming to me for one very small bathroom cabinet! In my quest for the easiest way to paint a cabinet, I ran across a post from blogger Amanda, who blogs over at Dwelling in Happiness, about painting your bathroom cabinet the easy way and I was hooked! (you can read her post here,  http://www.dwellinginhappiness.com/how-to-paint-your-bathroom-vanity-the-easy-way/ ) She swears by BEHR Marquee which happens to be a primer and paint in one.  And hey, her cabinet turned out great so I was totally willing to give the Marquee a try, whats the worst that could happen?

Thanks to Amanda's post my decision was made on what type of paint to use.  The only thing to I had do was head to the good ole' Home Depot and grab the BEHR Marquee!

The final "color" decision: BEHR Marquee-Limousine Leather (aka Black)
Interior Semi-Gloss Enamel Advanced Stain-Blocking Paint & Primer

Here I go, time to prep the "patient."  I removed all of the junk from the cabinet and drawers, removed the drawer fronts, wiped everything down, lightly sanded, wiped again and got to work with the "magic" paint.  I used a foam brush and foam roller, because I don't like the look that paintbrush bristles or a traditional paint roller gives.

Being the new color is so dark and I'm covering up a lighter wood, I opted for three coats of the Marquee paint.  The three coats also helped to even out the brush strokes so they were not quite as noticeable.  Once everything was nice and dry it was time to put the cabinet back together.

Here is the end result and I couldn't be happier! The BEHR Marquee Paint did NOT disappoint! So easy to use and covered beautifully!  (Spoiler Alert: If you look closely you can spot the new wallpaper in the reflection of the mirror, which is the next post in my series.)  You may also notice that those are the same old boring drawer and cabinet pulls that were on the vanity before the facelift.  Drawer and cabinet hardware are an important "accessory" not to be overlooked.  It's like adding the final touches to your favorite outfit.  I am still on the hunt for perfect hardware, who knew this would be a such a difficult decision?!  I will continue to hunt for the perfect flair and personality for the new vanity and I'll update my post when I find them...promise!

Well, there it is! The first step towards an exciting new space that just might become my new favorite spot in our house! (Ok...truth be told that'll never happen because my couch will always be the most popular space for me!)

Looks really good. What white paint would you suggest using on bathroom cabinets?
