We need help refurbishing a Las Vegas plaster/cement pool from 1972...what are the newest affordable materials for DIY Rehabing pool surface decking & coping that two women can accomplish on our own? We are hoping to offer a limited reservation doggie daycare on our 1/2 acre lot for swimming & running etc. We bought this fixer upper as there are no water for our fur babies here in Las Vegas can you imagine! We would also LOVE if possible to have dock diving as well as water therapies areas etc.

For doggy use, have you considered a "Beach" end of the pool? This is a job for pros, but the slanted floor surface of the pool allows the dogs and people to walk in to the depth they prefer, ankle deep to submersion while the other end of the pool is deeper. This would be the best way to get infirm dogs in and out of the water. What are your skills? What sort of deck surface do you envision? Cement can get awfully hot on paws and feet too.

What a great idea...when we redo pool I may ask about that but then how do you maintain filtration etc? We ar for sure putting in a ramp with something sun resistant & easy for dogs to climb up ...any ideas what fabric to use for ramp? Decking not sure yet either but clearly the dogs will not be out dur hotest part of the day but we will be designing a canopy to cover some of the pool/ decking...

I agree with M.M. - this is a job for professionals. I just had my pool replastered, and it was a challenging & multi-process job. Not something for an amateur to take on. You have to know what you're doing. The cheapest finish is white plaster. Anything more raises the cost. Also, I don't quite understand the need for a "dock". Again, agree with M.M. here. Besides - looking at the overhead shot, it doesn't look like you would actually have the room. Good luck!

Well, the beach edge is still part of the pool the same body of water, it's just like a super shallow end of the pool that is a long slope to walk in as deep as they want. For steps, I'd use some kind of marine material that's non-slip when wet or can be submerged. outdoor carpet or heavy rubber mats might work. It might need to be replaced after being in the chlorine for a couple of seasons, so see if there;s a way to make it easily removable rather than just adhered/glued/caulked on. the bonus of steps, or wide terraces/beach edge is that the shallower water get nice and warm, good for aches and pains.. Here's a picture showing steps and a ramp/beach edge pool, sometimes they're called walk-in pools.. I always love to see folks helping animals.. your project sounds like a doggie summer camp! a friend's German shep always liked to lie on the second step, it was wide and the water came up to her neck, keeping her cool but her head and ears dry!
