If it's a young plant, it might need a while to need to climb. A lot of the early energy is used to increase its size, leaves and vines. Make sure the trellis is contacting the plant and every now and then, train the plant to twine around it. Once the plant finds it, it should start to do its thing!

We use pantie hose to tie tomato vines to sticks or metal cages. They tend not to bruise the plant. I don't know anything about clematis, but thought this suggestion might be useful.

I use twist-ties. You can buy a reel of plastic-coated twist tie wire for a couple of dollars at garden stores, and just cut off a piece the size you need. Or you can save the ones you get for trash bags, bread wrappers, etc., and use those. Garden stores also sell little foam covered wires, or Velcro pieces, which you could also use.

You won't need many, because the clematis vine will start sending out tendrils to hold on to the trellis by itself eventually. I have had the best luck with trellises that are made of thin metal, so the clematis tendrils wrap neatly around.

The pantyhose is by far the most economical (if you have old pantyhose). I cut mine across the leg part so I had a circle(like a rubber band. Just wrap it around the vine & trellis section together loosely until your clematis begins to send out the tendrils that grab the trellis because the are wound like a spring. If a tendril is not quite close enough to trellis, just carefully hold the stem it is attached to closer to the trellis until you can manually get the tendril started around the trellis.

I have two. Clematis puts out tendrils to attach itself. You can loosely tie it to the trellis to get it started. I run string from the base of the plant and tie it to the top of the trellis. I weave longer branches in and out of the trellis. You can also lean some long thin branches from the base of the plant and against the trellis. Let the plant do it's own.

you can use the wire ties from banded celery for many things in the garden. There is a green plasticy tape on rolls you can also use its handy for any thing in the garden you need to tie up..
