Hi Barbara, A couple of questions and I will also give my comments.
What are the cupboards made of? Are they getting water dripped on the doors from the sink above? You want to make sure they are dry before you start to do anything and to be sure that no mold forms on any damp/wet spots.
An easy fix would be to paint the cupboards. Remove the doors and hinges and make sure you clean the cupboards thoroughly with a cleaner like TSP (trisodium phosphate). If they are shiny now, you can either lightly sand or use liquid sand paper to give the current finish some 'teeth' for the new finish to adhere to.
I would suggest priming and then painting if that is a high use area. There are many cabinet and trim paints that are durable. Paint in either semi gloss or gloss paint finish.
If you have a picture of the cupboards, please attach one and we can chat a bit more. But the main thing is not to rush into it, do the prep work and enjoy the results.
If paint isn't an option for you, you can put a new face onto doors with bead board or something similar.
And when you get the cupboards all spruced up, consider new knobs and handles so it is like a new set of cupboards.
Good luck!
