How to Paint a brick fireplace?

I used regular latex paint 50-50 with water . It came out great, but you can dilute more for a lighter coverage or add more paint for more solid coverage. Mine is stone and was black mortar and orangy looking sandstone. It is now whitish mortar and a whitewashed look to still see the stone grains..........love it. Put down lots of plastic, it splatters from the brush strokes. Very happy with result.
