Building my own window boxes

Greetings - I'd like to hang window boxes at my home to make the outside more aesthetically pleasing. Right now it just looks boring. I've been doing some research on building your own, and, given I'm not that crafty, building ones that are easy. I am challenged to find any 'easy' DIY projects and wondering if it makes more sense to purchase them instead. Thanks for your advice. Anne

Whether you make them yourself or not.... depends on the size of your windows.... you may not be able to find ready built boxes...
if you need to have custom made... HomeAdvisor.com or Angieslist.com can put you in touch with a reference checked, verified carpenter or handy guy/gal to build them for you... and help you install them too....
As for material... as their advice... and ask if cedar is a good choice for YOUR area.
If you can build a long box using 1/2x6in boards, 1 long piece Bout 2ft for base, 2 long boards bout 2ft 1inch for long sides, 2 short boards 6in long nail asides to bottom board n your done! Home depot or Menards can cut them for you.. Drill a few smal holes in base unless for indoors n waterproof all over, use plastic square plant holders n place in the box n plant your plants!!
This is a carpentry project and not all that difficult if you have carpenters' tools and know how to use them. You are correct that if you have to buy tools and can find pre-made boxes that you like you will save money.

Generally window boxes are the length of the window they are under, and often have a slanted front board. See window box here which goes under double windows. You could also get plastic window boxes and fasten them to brackets (see pic) that you screw into house. Unless you have an electric saw, an electric screwdriver, a good place to work, googles, work gloves etc, I would not suggest doing this yourself. I have seen my husband do dozens of projects but still have no desire to use power tools!

If you use pressure treated wood for you boxes, make them to accommodate plastic planters/liners. Most plants don't like pressure treated wood. If you make them from cedar or redwood, put them together with stainless steel screws or nails. These woods have tannins that react to galvanized metal (even hot dipped or double dipped). Plastic liners in a window box will make it easier for you to plant first then slip them into the window boxes, especially if some are on the second floor, accessed via a bedroom. Home Depot and Lowes will cut the boards for you. If you purchase them buy the matching brackets and spare yourself the trouble of building the support brackets, they would be the trickiest part of a DIY.
