How can I make my backyard patio a bit more private?

My neighbors have built a raised deck and when they are throwing a party there is no real privacy in my back yard. I want something that will allow us privacy to use the basement walkout door and patio. I like my neighbors but I don't want to be relaxing on my patio when they have guests. I feel like I'm on display.

Hi Jackie. I am the same way! We planted emerald green arborvitaes. They make a nice natural fence.

Lattice walls work well - wood or plastic, privacy but air comes through

I second that idea about the lattice. It is kinda pricy though you don't have to spend much more to just buy the full on privacy fence panels as they usually run around $30 a piece.

Re trees, I’m a fan of cypress and poplars. They grow quickly, are tall, slim and elegant. Depending on where you live, of course, but our arborvita have constantly need trimming and tying because of wind and snow damage.

There are also new hybrid willows that are quite pretty, as are smoke-hedge.

I dont know that you can put up a high enough fence to insure your privacy from a raised deck.

You could get a couple of very large market umbrellas and angle them. Put a fun chair or two and yard sale table under them so it doesn’t look odd, just that you expect company over the summer. They’re on sale most places now. They’re fun and very attractive.

    I hear you!

While planted greenery will some day be thick enough to provide privacy, it does require maintenance and several years of growth to be effective.

For a fast fix, my suggestion is to purchase a large cantilever crank umbrella. These can be raised or lowered, tilted almost to wall position, according to the sun, time of day, or shielded from neighbour's activities.

While you are relaxing under the umbrella, you can then perhaps think about getting a retractable awning to mount above the back window.
