My husband wanted a reading chair, but we had spent alot on two recliners and a sette so we couldn't afford another chair.
I love going to car boots and on one occasion I found a chair for £3.00.
So I booked myself a five week class in upholstery and took my chair and the fabric I chose along with it.
I had decided I wanted to do a patchwork chair. I knew how to do patchwork but wasn't sure how to go about putting it on the chair.
The tutor was surprised with my choice but encouraging. But basically left me to create. She did help guide me with awkard areas like around the legs.
The material I had decided to use was velvet. I loved the richness of velvet and had some oddments I had bought from a carboot sale. I also found a sample for the main fabric on eBay that was ideal, the only problem was that and the other pieces weren't big enough on their own, so this is why doing a patchwork chair was the answer.

Before beeing upholstered
I took every tack out of the chair.
This took approximately 4 hours. Later I was left with the fabric pieces to use as patterns.
I used the velvet fabric in a patchwork design, and using the old fabric pattern to cut it to shape once the design pieces were sewn, I left extra material around the edge for any possible mistakes, and also to allow for easiness in manipulating the fabric around awkward area's like the legs.
Some of the patchwork being formed.
Once I had sewn all the pieces together for the base of the chair, I did the front and the back also in patchwork. I hadn't enough of the orange or patterned fabric to put on the back, so I picked out another colour that was in the main fabric.
Adding the base fabric over the chair base.
After tacking the base in place, I did the front, tacking the top then the bottom and then the sides, stretching and manipulating it in place.
The back was the last piece to go on.
Tacked the front
The back was done by tacking the top with the fabric flipped over to the front, then brought back over to the back.
The bottom was then tacked.
The sides were pinned and tucked in and sewn with a ladder stitch.
Sewing the sides.
To finish I put hessian on the underside.
I then trimmed the chair with pompom braid around the bottom.
How the chair was tacked on the underside.
Finished chair
