Proper steps without breaking ceramic, pottery, chalk etc? Preventative measures?Any ideas would certainly be appreciated--don't want to break them--just need drainage. Also, how big should I make?

You should buy a very small ceramic drill bit. Put tape over the area you want to drill to control streas.

Experiment on an already damaged pot.

      Thank you--every little tidbit helps!

Start small and get bigger with the size of the bits, it may be a little more time or work, but it will be harder to crack or break the pot. Let the drill do the work and don't press down hard on the drill or you will crack or even shatter the pot. You want the holes to end up big enough to ensure good drainage, or more smaller ones. To keep the soil in I put landscape fabric cut to the size of the inside of the bottom of the pot and put gravel or rocks on top of that.

Thank you very much--what do u do when drill bits get hot?

You can stop for a moment when they get hot, but they shouldn't get that hot. Perhaps you need a stronger drill because yours is having to work too hard. If you are using the right bits, it shouldn't heat the drill up enough to over heat. Even our oldest drills (almost forty five yrs old) didn't heat up when we were working with 3/4" treated marine plywood last summer. I would consider getting a heavy duty electric drill.
