How to decorate Walls behind a wood fire

We are renovating a 1930's miners cottage in Norseman Western Australia and the house is made of fibro and wood. We have a wood heater and I want to decorate the unpainted wall behind it. Any ideas.
PS Our nearest town is two and a half hours drive away and sometimes we have to order things in, so I am looking at alternative ways to do heat-resistant walls

Could you make a fire resistant wall out of smallish stones you pick up around your home? I can see it and think it would be neat and regular and unusual.
My first thought was that you must have plenty of rocks. How about a rock wall? http://www.instructables.com/id/how-to-build-an-indoor-rock-wall/
