Chippy Milk Painted Dresser

I purchased this dresser at an estate sale and decided it needed a facelift. The varnish was thick and cloudy, so I decided to give it a couple of coats of Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Linen. I was thrilled with the results and the chippy finish. I sealed the paint with hemp oil and added new glass knobs to add to the farmhouse look I was going for. I love how the dresser looks aged, like it was found in an old barn and not newly painted.
This is the only before picture I have of the dresser. The varnish was really thick and starting to cloud in areas. All the pretty detailing of this piece didn't show up.
This is how the dresser looked after I painted it with 2 coats of Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Linen, added glass drawer hardware and a coat of hemp oil to seal the paint.
The milk paint worked it's wonders and gave this piece an aged look without looking newly painted
Here you can see how the paint crackled and peeled.
This is the top of the dresser, where I layered a coat of Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan in Aubusson Blue. I like how the top looks like the paint has worn off over the years.

Did you do anything to the wood before you painted it? Such as strip the old finish off, or sand it?
