How do you remove wood paneling from an older home?
The previous homeowners painted their wood panel red and yellow. I was interested in how to remove the paneling.

- Laura Cooperon May 23, 2018It's much easier to just place drywall over it. You can use thin drywall since it will be fully supported by the panelingHelpfulReply
- Lindaon May 23, 2018Drywalling over is fine but remove window and door frames first or that will be another issue. If newer frameless windows it will be easy to trim out the edges of a layer of drywall. Hope this helpsHelpfulReply
- Kenon May 23, 2018Color is not important to removal of paneling. You just need to find a place to start and pull. No secrets.HelpfulReply
- Macysmomon May 23, 2018The paneling should be nailed on and once you get the first piece/edge off it should go really easily. Some people loved to put a lot of glue underneath and that makes it a little harder. The paneling isn't going anywhere...don't glue it down! If there is glue, you will have some repair to do to the wall. Be aware that liquid nails will bleed color through paint. In my experience it continued to bleed through even with Kilz The problem with just adding sheet rock is that if you have a window on that wall you will have to re-face the window frame and sometimes that is a real problem dependent upon the type of window you have. You won't know completely until you get that first piece off and see what you are dealing with. Good luck and have fun!!HelpfulReply
- Carol Marszalekon May 23, 2018Certainly it depends on whether it was nailed orglued to the underpayment. You might have to try prying from the top orcorner wall. If glued it will probably tear up the wall beneath, so be prepared to have to re-drywall.HelpfulReply
