You just need a substitute for bookshelves? That doesn't give us much to go on. Because of space, or budget or what? Anyway, here's what I told my kids to do in their first apartments: Purchase concrete cinder blocks or pyramid blocks (concrete blocks in the shape of a pyramid, but with blunt tops), two for every shelf you want. You can paint or stain them. Use lumber (boards) you stain or paint, or purchase white or black melamine shelving. All of this is found at any home improvement store. My son used black pyramid blocks and stained boards, and my daughter used stained pyramid blocks and white melamine shelf boards. NOTE: Set the first set of blocks on coasters so the paint or stain does not seep into your carpet!
