Previous owners had glued carpet on steps, hubs pulled some off. How do we get the rest off AND ......make the steps look good again? Sure is ugly where the carpet is removed. But carpet is a mess too. Help!🤪🤪🤪
OR..can we just glue new indoor outdoor on top of step after removing carpet...WITHOUT REMOVING all residual glue?

You might want to try acetate. This should loosen the old glue, then scrap off with a putty knife. It will take some time, but should work. If steps are wood sand then paint or stain and seal. If steps are cement, clean really well, paint and seal.

    Hope this helps.

Hi there you probably could get away with gluing new outdoor carpet over what is left but make sure you get as much off as you can! If you wanted to totally remove it I would start with an orbital hand sander and a good face mask.

hmm..I don’t want to put new carpet over the old,but do want to know if I can just remove the old and glue over the residue without the hard work of sanding etc. thinking of grass look carpet..we don’t want to slip on steps...

A heat gun could help remove the old adhesive... pull up as much of the carpet as you can... use a large putty knife with the heat gun...

Since the steps seem to be concrete... you may have to go over it with a sander and course grit paper... then you can decide how to finish it off.... a tile like slate or similar.. or sanding and staining or sealing

My problem's a little different -- installed rubber stair treads on finished oak steps to reduce fall risk for my mom. Now want to remove them but how to get rid of the "glue" without destroying the finish? So acetone's out, but some sites suggest WD40, followed by thorough washing with Murphy's oil soap. You might try that. Good luck!
