Proper Ground Cover for Backyard Play Area, Mulches, Smaller Rock, etc

I have a weed covered area of my lawn that was infested with grubs which devoured all the grass. I would like to use the area for possibly a swingset, sandbox or lawn games for kids. I can’t decide on the best ground cover to put in for that area. Everything I look at has drawbacks so some input from others would be much appreciated . Thank You
