What's the right way to hang curtains?

Generally if the curtains are long (to the floor) the rod should be hung higher than the top of the window. I usually like to use wooden rods and wooden rings that the curtains are fastened to. It really depends on the type of window and/or the curtain itself.
Where are you hanging the curtains ? Some like to hang from the ceiling, some just around the window, and some in-between. Try to imagine what they look like, and remember that once you make holes, and decide to move the curtains, the holes need to be patched.
