I breed tortoises which means I have several aquariums of different sizes. I need an area to keep them with the ability to get into the top of them easily for cleaning.

I used to pet sit for a neighbor who gave up her dining room to aquariums and bird cages. She kept all of their food on the table. I don't have pets, so it certainly isn't my style, but it seemed to work well for her, and made it easy for me. I'll admit I was a little afraid of the tortoise, who I was supposed to take outside in the morning and bring back in for the night, but I couldn't carry him and open and close doors. (They had an inside dog and some outside dogs, and the same for cats, so leaving the door open wasn't an option.) He'd start "swimming" all crazy. I finally discovered I could put him in a cardboard box. I don't think he liked that any more than I liked carrying him flailing about. Then I'd come back in the evening and he'd be "swimming" on his back. Poor guy. I think tortoises are fascinating creatures, and I totally respect you for raising them!

They are awesome. Did you know they know their name and will come to it? Did you know they don't "hiss" at people, they exhale to suck in all their limbs as protection from predators? Did you know that they can feel you touching their shell? I could talk tortoises for DAYS!

I would recommend one of those heavy duty garage shelf units. You can stack them or keep them low and set the height of each shelf as you desire. Depending on the size of your aquariums, I think you'll be able to manage - they're 48 inches long and 18 inches deep. If you tend to drip a lot of water, you can cover the MDF wood shelves with contact paper or even spray them with a few coats of polyurethane. Cheers!
