When we replaced our dining room chairs with comfy upholstered ones, I knew that the white slipcover wouldn't last long in our home with messy kids and a dog. So I dyed the slipcovers shibori style to protect them and hide messes.
Remove the slipcover from the chair and wash them. Let air dry.
Lay the slipcover out flat. Don't worry about wrinkles too much.
Use rubberbands to tie up your slipcover. This particular shibori pattern is very similar to tie dye.
Fill a 5 gallon bucket with hot water. Add salt for darker colors. Stir thoroughly.
Add your dye. I added 9 large teaspoons to the water and stirred it.
Wet the slipcovers before submerging them into the dye. I was able to fit 2 slipcovers at a time.
Add 1/3 c of dissolved soda ash after 15 minutes.
Let it sit for another 30 minutes or longer for dark colors.
Rinse the slipcovers under running water until the water runs clear. I highly recommend using a utility sink for this because it's messy.
Do not remove the rubber bands until the water runs clear.
Repeat as necessary for your other slipcovers.
Wash them in the washing machine, making sure you run a cleaning cycle after you're done to remove any dye.
Air dry to avoid shrinkage.
Replace your slipcovers onto your chair and enjoy.
Wash as necessary, being sure to air dry each time.
