s it necessary to lay plastic under clay dirt or pebble rock when changing landscape? We're planning a change soon to succulents and lantana

Landscape fabric will keep the rocks and pebbles from sinking into the soil. Weeds are easier to remove because they can't anchor their roots.

Thank you for replying. I hope my question wasn't too confusing, I meant in some places we're putting pebble or dirt, and succulents elsewhere in the area.

Are you planning on planting in clay type soil? You will need to heavily amend your clay so that it drains quickly for desert plants.

The answer to your question is “Yes”. You need a weed barrier for your xeriscape.

As for the plastic, I find that erosion fabric does a better job at blocking weeds, holds up much longer, and does not litter your soil with plastic which never goes away (It just gets broken into smaller pieces).

    😊

I would use landscape fabric laid down and fastened with large U-shaped pins. Otherwise weeds will be ruining your Xericape, same for bird droppings which is how seeds are dispersed.

Wherever you don't want weeds, use landscape fabric. Hope thats clear enough.

Don't use plastic. You still need some kind of drainage. Use landscape fabric. Allows drainage and blocks weeds.
