I have a mature Redblood Jap. Maple

It has fissures in areas, where the bark puffed up, like a bug may have attacked. Tiny mites, (look like ants) are trailing when bark is flaked off...what is It? In deep South, in a shaded spot next to home.

can you post a photo?It could be a few different issues
Powdery mildew
Canker
Leaf spot
Root rot
