Best way to keep weeds at bay in vegetable garden?

  • Dig them out by hand or smother and cover with mulch.

    The best way is paper. NOTHING grows through thick papers. We shredded everything, envelopes, papers, catalogs, everything. Then dunked it in water to keep it settled around all the plants like cabbages, tomatoes, anything. It would dry out and stay like thick mulch. Nothing grew through it when it was several layers thick. Some people use flat newspapers, but they too should be wet and several layers thick. Otherwise a slight breeze blows them away. Once wet they harden and stay put as a rule. In the fall we tilled it into the soil
