If you are fed up with finding your toddlers LEGO building blocks lying all over the floor, which is a nightmare when you stand on them barefoot. This was the inspiration for this project. I wanted to make storage for all my nieces blocks but also somewhere out of the way for her to play with them. I found this old desk which was perfect for this project.

Toddler Building Block Table

The table was very worn, one draw was broken and the sides were all covered in stickers and the top was full of scratches.

To remove the stickers I used a heat gun and they all fell off in seconds. Make sure you do not go to close or you could scorch the surface.

Toddler Building Block Table

The table was a bit high for a toddler, so I marked out the size that I wanted which was 50 cm and cut away the excess with a circular saw. This also removed the broken drawer which worked out well.

Next I sanded down all the wood. Even though I was going to be painting the wood I know from past projects all the defects show through even using chalk paint.

I painted the table using chalk paint because that was what I had at home and gave it 4 coats of water based polyurethane to make it more toddler proof.

Toddler Building Block Table

Because I was calling it a building block table, I wanted the drawers to look like a building block. To do this I used a hole saw attached to my drill and cut out 8 circles for each drawer. I sanded off all the rough edges and filled in the centre hole with wood filler. I rubbed the surface with some sand paper to smooth out the filler.

I painted the drawer fronts and the circles using Unicorn Spit Stain and glaze and added 4 coats of polyurethane. I used epoxy resin glue to attach the circles to the front of the drawers.

Toddler Building Block Table

I bought 4 building block base plates for the top. I was going to glue them to the top, but had second thoughts and thought it would be easier to sell if the table could be used for other activities.

Toddler Building Block Table

TA-DA the finished table that can be used for all your toddlers needs. And when they are finished playing all the blocks and toys can be stored in the drawers.

The cost of this project will depend on the materials you have at home.
