yes, you could dry bush with black. Or get darker shades of the blue and gray and dry brush them on.

how about antiquing wax?

Paint the green areas and front edge of the shelves black.

Paint it all gray.

First off, part of what is throwing you off is the brown on the inside of the shelf. You need to paint it grey just like the trim. Then edge each shelf front with black paint. Now the blue. You can dry brush it with black but you will still see the blue. I would just bit the bullet and paint the blue black. Then if you want, you could even dry brush some of your grey on the black. Then your shelf will look really nice I think, all very cohesive. That is a nice color scheme for any room too.

Take the paints you used back to where you purchased them, bring along a picture of the piece, and a picture of a piece that has the look you are going for. Ask for sample sizes of colors a few shades darker than your current colors. Then try out the combo on a scrsp piece or one end of your piece. Often seeing the colors side by side, will help. I also agree that finishing the inside in the grey, (or whatever shade you end up darkening up to) would help with cohesiveness. This will likely help you see it in a better light.

Another option if you want to darken the colors is to add some black paint to leftovers of the original colors then repaint. Then you won't have to try to dry brush it and can have a solid color, if that's the look you originally wanted. I also agree that the brown inside is throwing off your vision of the final look. Did you plan to paint it? If so, do it before you make other decisions. Also, I'd suggest taking it inside. The light is different inside and the colors might look truer.
