I am doing the exact same thing right now. My coffee table is a little too tall, so I'm cutting off 2-3 inches off the legs. I'm using a chalk paint. The top will be black and the base will be a dusty grey green over black. I'm going to distress the base to let some of the black and original finish show in places. I also am adding some thin gold hand painted embellishments along the top of the base and very tiny flecks of gold. I am going to use the wax finish to "age" it and give it a slight sheen. The finishing touch with be brass upholstery tacks along the top edge that separates the black and base color.

I love the colors in the chalk paint pallets. There are several brands. They also do not require you to strip the furniture or sand it. Good luck to both of us~ :)

Check out the General Finishes website. I find their products are superb.
